Silver Price Per Gram
By Alex Capitol · Updated 2026-04-14 · Methodology
The silver price per gram is calculated by dividing the troy ounce spot price by 31.1035 (grams per troy ounce). At today's silver price of ~$53/oz, 1 gram of pure silver is worth approximately $1.70. Silver is quoted per troy ounce on COMEX and LBMA, but per-gram pricing is standard in Asian and Middle Eastern markets.

Silver vs Gold: Price Per Gram Comparison
| Metal | Price/Troy Oz | Price/Gram | Price/Kilo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | ~$4,600 | ~$148 | ~$148,000 |
| Silver | ~$53 | ~$1.70 | ~$1,704 |
| Ratio | 87:1 | 87:1 | 87:1 |
The gold-to-silver ratio is currently ~87:1 — meaning 1 gram of gold costs roughly 87x more than 1 gram of silver. The historical average is ~65:1, suggesting silver is relatively undervalued at current levels.

How to Calculate Silver Price Per Gram
Formula: Silver price per gram = Spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035
Example: Silver spot = $53/oz
- Per gram: $53 ÷ 31.1035 = $1.704
- Per 10 grams: $1.704 × 10 = $17.04
- Per kilogram: $1.704 × 1,000 = $1,704
For gold, this same formula applies but with higher base values. See the gold price calculator for custom weight calculations.
Silver Purity Grades
Unlike gold, silver is rarely sold in karats. Instead, silver uses fineness grades:
| Grade | Purity | Silver per Gram | Price/Gram* | Common Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| .999 (Fine Silver) | 99.9% | 0.999g | ~$1.70 | Bullion bars, coins |
| .9999 (Ultra-fine) | 99.99% | 0.9999g | ~$1.70 | Canadian Maple Leaf |
| .925 (Sterling) | 92.5% | 0.925g | ~$1.58 | Jewelry, flatware |
| .900 (Coin Silver) | 90% | 0.900g | ~$1.53 | Pre-1965 US coins |
| .800 | 80% | 0.800g | ~$1.36 | European coins, some jewelry |
Approximate melt values at $53/oz. Actual dealer prices include premiums and may be lower for scrap.
Sterling silver (.925) is the most common jewelry standard. If you're selling sterling silver jewelry or flatware, the melt value is roughly 92.5% of the fine silver per-gram price.

| EUR (€) | ~€1.56 | per gram |
| GBP (£) | ~£1.34 | per gram |
| INR (₹) | ~₹145 | per 10 grams |
| JPY (¥) | ~¥256 | per gram |
| AED (د.إ) | ~6.26 | per gram |
Approximate conversions. Forex rates fluctuate — see gold price in various currencies for live converted precious metal prices.
In India and the Middle East, silver is commonly quoted per 10 grams or per kilogram, rather than per ounce.
Physical Silver: Weight and Value Reference
Buying physical silver? Here's what common items weigh and are worth at current spot:
| Item | Weight | Approx. Spot Value* |
|---|---|---|
| 1 oz American Silver Eagle | 31.1g | ~$53 |
| 1 oz Canadian Maple Leaf | 31.1g | ~$53 |
| 5 oz silver bar | 155.5g | ~$265 |
| 10 oz silver bar | 311g | ~$530 |
| 100 oz silver bar | 3,110g (~6.9 lbs) | ~$5,300 |
| 1 kg silver bar | 1,000g (~2.2 lbs) | ~$1,704 |
Spot value only. Physical silver carries dealer premiums of 8-15% above spot for coins and 3-8% for larger bars. Smaller units carry higher premiums per gram.
Silver is bulky compared to gold — $10,000 of silver weighs about 6 kilograms (13 lbs), while $10,000 of gold weighs just 68 grams (2.4 oz). This storage cost is a real factor for physical silver investors.

However, silver carries higher dealer premiums as a percentage (8-15% vs 3-8% for gold) and is more volatile. See is silver a good investment? for a full analysis.
How do I calculate the value of my silver? Weigh your silver in grams, determine its purity (.999, .925, etc.), then multiply: weight in grams × purity × per-gram spot price. Example: 50g of sterling silver = 50 × 0.925 × $1.70 = $78.63 at spot. Dealers typically pay 85-95% of spot for scrap silver. For gold, use our gold karat calculator.
